Jordana Spiro is down to earth, laid back, and funny. And she’s as sharp and sassy as her small-screen alter ego. She stars as beer-drinking, poker-playing, sports-loving guy’s girl PJ on the hit TBS comedy My Boys. Glam chatted with Spiro about the upcoming season of My Boys (which premieres on June 12th) and touched on a few of her favorite things.
New episodes of My Boys premiere in about a week. Tell me what fans can look forward to this season?Sure. Let’s see. Somebody gets famous. There’s going to be a wedding. And Andy hires a really hot Swedish nanny to help with his daughter. And that has a ripple effect.
This show has kind of a cult following about a tomboy and her group of guy friends, why do you think this show appeals to a broad spectrum of people? From the fans that I’ve spoken to it appeals to them because, I think the character, PJ, is really relatable. She’s very much your every girl. And also the banter between the guys is very clever. And guys will find something in themselves that feels relatable to any of these guys. As I said before PJ is a bit of a tomboy. In real life, are you a guy’s girl or do you gravitate more to the girlie girl?I think I’m very close to how P.J. is. I like to be easy-going and just casual about things. I’d choose hiking, camping, and traveling over manicures, pedicures, and spas – though I wouldn’t turn down a spa treatment. Do you have a close group of guy friends?Yeah, I do. As a matter of fact when I was in my early 20s – so yesterday – I lived with a group of six guys. We kept adopting more guys. It’s the time of your life when you do that sort of thing.Your character is a sports columnist and a huge sports fanatic. Are you a sports fan and if so, what’s your favorite team? You know what, I didn’t watch any sports. That’s probably the only difference between P.J. and I as far as our interests go. I didn’t watch a lot of sports growing up. I definitely picked Madonna over sports. But I had to learn a lot about baseball and since then I’ve learned to adopt baseball as something I like to watch and I like to know what’s going on. And what about poker – PJ is always playing poker with the guys? Do you have any skills?Actually, I said baseball is the only thing, but I also had to learn how to play poker. So, nothing was similar, actually. But I had to learn. So I’ve lost a lot of money researching this role. Happily, I’ve gained it back.Your character is a beer girl. Pick your poison. Are you a beer or a cocktail girl?Well, PJ for sure. I only have her drinking beer or scotch. And that’s because our creator Betsy Thomas, our executive producer who P.J. is basically based on, she’s a scotch drinker and a beer drinker. I am a jack and ginger girl myself.Any fabulous summer plans? We’re shooting the whole summer. Then I don’t know I’m juggling a few options. Hopefully, they’ll land me in Fiji somehow. What’s your favorite summer activity?Working on My Boys. Working on My Boys with Baileys. A few quickie questions. What’s your favorite:Food: Sushi.Secret indulgence: Baileys. I love Baileys so much.Pick for must-see movie of the summer: Iron Man. And a movie I haven’t seen yet is Indiana Jones. And, finally, any hidden talents?I can do a split. But I can’t get up after.
